David’s 10 films to look forward to in 2017

Since we are now over a month into 2017, I thought I’d compile a list of the 10 films I’m looking forward to the most from the rest of the year.

1. Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

Release Date – December 15th

I think everyone is excited for the next chapter in the Star Wars saga. Rian Johnson is at the helm (one of my favorite modern filmmakers) who has made some great 21st Century films such as Brick (2005) and Looper (2012). I’m excited to see what he’s cooked up for us Star Wars fans. This will be the last performance of Carrie Fisher (R.I.P.) as Princess Leia. We also get to see the return of the many great characters introduced in The Force Awakens. Hopefully, we’ll also get to see Luke (Mark Hamill) back in action.  I truly believe that this might be the best episode yet. I’ve been waiting patiently for Disney to release a trailer.

2. Dunkirk

Release Date – July 21st

Christopher Nolan’s next film looks epic to say the least. It has a stacked cast (Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Harry Styles, among others). This cast includes some of Nolan’s regulars and some newcomers as well. We are also getting a 70mm release in certain theaters. This looks to be another promising war film from one of the greatest modern directors.

3. War for the Planet of the Apes

Release Date – July 14th

I’ve been really impressed with Fox’s Planet of the Apes reboot films. This trailer promises to up the stakes of the previous films. We got Andy Serkis coming back as Ceasar leading his ape army against the humans, presumably led by Woody Harrelson. Matt Reeves is as at the helm again after the success of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (which was one of my favorites of 2014). Excited to see the war between humans and apes on the big screen.

4. Alien: Covenant

Release Date – May 19th

The sequel to Prometheus and the prequel to Alien is finally coming out this year. Ridley Scott is back at the helm. The film promises to answer all your questions  from Prometheus. It’s also been rumored that a new form of Xenomorph will be introduced in this film. The film promises to bring back the scares of the Alien franchise.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Release Date – May 5th

No one expected Guardians of the Galaxy to be the breakout hit that it was in the summer of 2014. The sequel seems like it will continue this trend and promises to give us more of the characters we grew to love. James Gunn is back at the helm. From the trailer, it looks like this film is going to be another fun ride and one of Marvel’s best franchises.

6. Blade Runner 2049

Release Date – October 6th

This film looks stunning! It promises to pay tribute to the original. Harrison Ford is back as Deckard. The cast is also stacked with some great newcomers including Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, among many others. It was shot by none other than Roger Deakins, one of the greatest cinematographers working today. It is also directed by Denis Villeneuve hot of the success of his recent sci-fi film Arrival (one of the best of 2016).

7. Baby Driver

Release Date – August 11th

This is Edgar Wright’s next feature, the genius behind such films as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim. I’m still dealing with the fact that he dropped out of Ant-Man but I’m excited to see him behind the camera again. There is not much known about this film besides its genre (heist film), but I’m sure it will have Wright’s signature wacky humor. It was also recently announced that the film will premiere at SXSW (South by Southwest Film Festival). The film has a stacked cast including Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey. Be on the lookout for this one come August.

8. Get Out

Release Date – February 24th

This is the feature film debut from Jordan Peele (as a writer/director), one of the masterminds behind Comedy Central’s hit show “Key and Peele” (which has unfortunately ended). This looks like one of the most inventive horror films in recent memory. The film promises to deal with serious subject matter and current issues within the horror genre.

9. John Wick 2

Release Date – February 10th

John Wick is one of the greatest action films of the 21st Century. I know people like to give Keanu Reeves a lot of crap, but he is a dedicated action star who does many of his own stunts. John Wick was the role he was born to play, so I’m glad to see he is suiting up and kicking ass again. Chad Stahelski is behind the camera for the second time.  This man helped to create many of the best stunts of 90’s and early 2000’s action films, so it’s great to see him in the director’s chair again.

10. Logan Lucky

Release Date – October 13th

Couldn’t find a good image for this one (the trailer has not been released either), so you’ll just have to take my word for it. Steven Soderbergh (the genius behind the Oceans remake franchise, among many other films) is back behind the camera after a four-year “retirement.” The film is about a NASCAR race heist and promises to provide both action and laughs. It stars Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Katie Holmes, among many others. Be on the lookout for this one in late 2017.

What other films are you looking forward to in 2017?
